3 Simple Tips for Choosing a Storage Unit

Storage units | Right Storage Unit for Your Belongings

With a little forethought and preparation, you can find the best sized public storage unit for your belongings. You don’t want to pay for more storage space than needed; but also do not want to cram too much stuff into a storage unit that is too small. If you are renting self-storage space for seasonal items, you should consider organizational space so you can easily reach the things you need without having to dig for them. If you discover too late that a storage unit is not a good fit, you could always exchange one size for another, but now you have wasted your time and energy. Here are 3 simple tips for choosing a storage unit that fits your needs the first time.

How to Choose the Right Storage Unit for Your Belongings

When you get it right the first time, you will knock off the task of choosing the right storage unit to store your belongings. Save time, energy and money by considering the storage facility location, the correct storage unit size, and any storage features your belongings will require.

1. Find a Storage Unit in a Convenient Location

Whenever possible, find a storage unit in a convenient location. Storing a boat on the way to the lake will make your boating adventures more enjoyable. Self-storage is all about gaining easy access to your belongings. This way, you can access them as often as you need. Furthermore, it’s a good idea to check on your storage unit every month to make sure nothing is missing or out of order; a convenient storage unit location will help you do this.

2. Figure Out the Storage Unit Size You Need

Round up the items you need to store (especially the larger items) to get an idea of how large the storage unit needs to be. Items that will be placed in stackable moving boxes will make good use of storage unit space. It is advised to use only two sizes of storage boxes so that when stacked, you can multiply out the needed storage space easier. Measure the width, length, and depth of items that cannot be boxed up such as furniture, refrigerators or motorcycles to make sure they will fit inside the storage unit. Consider that some boxes can be stacked on top of larger items like dressers or desks while other larger items will not be able to hold or store extra items. Finally, when you have a good idea of how large the storage unit needs to be, always round up. The tendency is to estimate on the small side and a little more space is better than too tight.

3. Storage Unit Access & Facility Features

Additional questions to consider when choosing the right storage facility are:

  • Will you be able to get to your things late at night or on a holiday? In other words, will you have 24/7 access to your storage unit?
  • Will you need climate-controlled storage? Items requiring climate control storage would include antiques, musical instruments or electronics.
  • Are different sized storage units offered so you only have to pay for the space you need?
  • Does the storage facility have tight security? Tight security for storage units would include a security fence, good lighting, exclusive access codes, round-the-clock video surveillance and hefty locks designed for storage units.
  • Will you need a delivery service or moving truck rentals? A self-storage facility with these features would be an added bonus.
